Obituary For Joan LaVerne DeLeonard

Joan LaVerne DeLeonard, 72, of Jacksonville, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Monday, January 3, 2022. She was born on August 10, 1949 to the late Alfred Harold and Thelma Vierra Sweet in Vallejo, CA. Surviving Joan is her loving and faithful husband of 40 years, David A. DeLeonard; sons, Michael J. DeLeonard of Clarksville, TN and Brian C. DeLeonard and wife, Nora of Jacksonville, NC; brothers, Michael Sweet of Lomis, CA and Bill Sweet of South San Francisco, CA; grandchildren, Liam, Gabriel, Timothy and Rose DeLeonard also of Jacksonville, NC. Joan was an amazing wife, mother, grandmother and sister. Her super powers were to keep a happy home and that she did. Sadly, her health for the last several years has kept her more at home, but she never stopped being there for her family. Although, Joan will be dearly missed she will be in our hearts forever. Services will be private. Please, share memories or condolences with the family by clicking the “Share-A-Memory” tab.

I met Joan through the after school program. She was was a dear friend and a pleasure to be around. A lot of fun times were had by us and the children in our care. She was also so happy to share good times she experienced with her cherished family. My daughter, Crystal, was also close to her. She always called Joan her "Mama Joan." Both Joan and Dave were friends of the family. My late husband, Harry, met Joan through Dave by working with him many years through base maintenance. Both of them will always hold a special place in our hearts. We are praying for peace for Joan's family, friends, and those she cared about. May God wrap his arms around all of them.

I remember when Joan and David came from California with Baby Michael. It was a joy to meet her and Michael. Don and I took David and Joan to see Washington, DC as a belated wedding present. Enjoyed that trip with them. We later visited them in Vallejo and she was a welcoming sweet woman. Joan had such a warm, sweet smile and soft way about her. A dedicated wife and mother she lived to make them all happy and she did, for sure. A big heart for children and grandchildren and those in the nursery and after school program she worked for.
