Obituary For John Edward Cosmos

John E. Cosmos, age 73, of Jacksonville, NC, died Friday, June 18, 2021 peacefully at home. He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Betsy, also of Jacksonville; his son, John Allen Cosmos of Paducah, Kentucky; his son, Army Major Joshua M Cosmos of Leavenworth Kansas; his older half-brother Rich Begnoche of St. Marys, Georgia and his younger brother, Doug Cosmos, of Fayetteville, Arkansas.

John was born in New Bedford, Massachusetts where he and his brothers grew up. He was a Journeyman Pipefitter in the local union for 30 years. He also served as a paratrooper in the Army’s 82nd Airborne in the early 1970s. When construction work was scarce, John was a professional fisherman out of New Bedford and was able to tell some stories from those experiences! He also worked a variety of other trades including brick-laying and carpentry. Additionally he served on the staff of a worldwide Christian ministry for a total of nine years.

John’s passions included fishing, deer hunting, knife-throwing, surfing, boating, playing blues harmonica and studying the Bible. John was dedicated to his country, the Boston Red Sox, the New England Patriots and the Boston Bruins. Although he was never able to meet his granddaughters, Persephone and Willow, he was looking forward to meeting his third granddaughter, Myla, who is due to be born in August of this year.

John was not only beloved by his immediate family but by the spouses of his siblings and sons, his many aunts, uncles and cousins and by Betsy’s family members too. A small gathering of church friends will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, June 23rd at Discovery Church International in Jacksonville NC. Next Spring family will gather in Washington DC to honor John with a memorial at Arlington National Cemetery.
