Obituary For William Alexander Higgs, Jr.

William Alexander Higgs, Jr. 86, of Jacksonville, NC, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Thursday, October 21, 2021. William was born on September 1, 1935 in Franklin, PA to the late William Alexander Higgs, Sr. and Rose Fucci Higgs. He is survived by his loving and faithful wife of over 40 years, Martha Cheney Higgs; sons, William Michael Higgs of Sierra Vista, AZ, Chaz Higgs of Reno, NV and William David Higgs of Brunswick, GA; siblings Harry Michael Singleton of Washington, DC, Margaret Buckner of Erie, PA, Philomena Jenkins of West Orange, NJ, Carmella McLaurin of Guys Mills, PA and 4 grandchildren.

William dedicated his life to serving his country. He retired after 30 years in the United States Marine Corp and then spent another 10 years in the Jacksonville Police Department. He loved his cars, especially the Vette and loved to RV. William and Martha had nicknames for each other. He called her “Bear” and she just called him “Higgs”. Their love for each other was unimaginable and life will never be the same without him here. Although we are ever so sad that our beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend has passed, we know that he is rejoicing in heaven. He will be dearly missed, but in our hearts forever.

A Graveside Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on October 27, 2021 at Seaside Memorial Park, 1161 State Road 1511, Swansboro, NC 28584.

I was a young Lieutenant when I reported to Tank BN. Gunner Higgs was our maintenance officer. He was a magnificent maintenance officer and he made sure us young Lts. knew he had the maintenance knowledge and made it also abundantly clear that he didn't care what we thought. He was one of those old school Marines who was brutal to his troops and the rest of us and they all loved him for it. We have lost a giant in the Tank community. Semper Fi Gunner and Fair winds and following seas as you go into your restful retirement.

Hi Martha, I am so very sorry to hear of Higgs' passing. He was a terrific, funny guy who loved you more than life itself! I think he was so very fortunate to have you by his side taking such good care of him during his final days. I pray he will RIP with our Lord and will now be pain free. John and I send our love and deepest sympathies to you and your family. Our thoughts and prayers will be with you and the family. Much love and prayers being sent your way, Liz & John Santiago 🙏🏻❤️🌹

I worked with Higgs at Jacksonville PD. I just told stories about him 2 days ago, I loved working with him. He was 1 of 2 people who were allowed to call me 'Missy'. He was gruff on the outside, but such a softy on the inside. My thoughts & prayers are with the family.💙
